. Machala lives in Botswana, a country located in South Africa. He was hemiplegic due to stroke, which was unable to look after himself in his daily life. After careful treatment in the acupuncture center set in his province by the foreign aid medical team from China, 55-year-old Machala could not only have dinner by himself, but also walk without his crutch, which became one of the most typical cases among over 37 thousand patients treated by the acupuncture center of China. When talking about the application of acupuncture therapy in Africa, Liu Shuo, an acupuncture doctor of China's aid to Botswana, was filled with pride on her face.
Liu told the correspondent that she had been worked as the doctor in Botswana for two years as well as serving as the team translator. Now she has returned to China and her original position. "Acupuncture therapy is widely acceptable among locals. From government officials to common people, they like to come to me for treatment and are satisfied with the effects. ""It is no exaggeration to say that there have been thousands of local officials treated by me, including the counselor of the president and the foreign minister. Common people accept acupuncture. On average, I receive 50 to more than 100 patients each day, quite a lot of whom come to see me from hundreds of miles away. “Liu recalled that, "There was a patient who had not been recovered for long time after he sprained his waist. Though treated by western medicine for several times, he was too painful to sleep every day. Then after the combined action of acupuncture and massage, the patient could walk as usual. Of course, this kind of case takes place everyday.
Chinese acupuncture is easy to operate, with low charges and side effects, which has been spread to over one hundred and forty countries and districts. In some African countries where drugs are deficient, people call acupuncture as "Chinese Magic Needle".
According to Liu Shuo, this little silver needle played a powerful role. Diseases like nerve deafness, hemiplegia, and nerve periarthritis due to taking anti-malaria drugs, would be cured in succession. On the other hand, a doctor with a set of needles could make a diagnosis and treatment to patients without many inspection equipments of western medicine. However, the actual situation is true. Due to destitute, many types of equipment in hospitals were assistance substances from the 70s and 80s, most of which were aging without accuracy; many hospitals even have no such equipments, and the situations in some countryside areas in Africa are even poorer. Acupuncture therapy is different, where the experience of doctors are significant, thus it replaces those high-tech inspection equipments.
At the same time, the low charge is also an advantage of acupuncture. For example, a ten-day treatment takes only about RMB120, which is only one sixth of that for western medicine treatment in local areas.
Of course, the magic oriental medical skill attracts not only patients, but also quite a lot local doctors to come for training. Dr. Alva is one of them. She is also the first foreign students of Liu Shuo. "At the beginning, Alva always praised that it was amazing to remove people's hurt by stabbing this little silver needle to them.” Later, Liu passed on her techniques little by little to Alva. Alva became a little calm, who not only followed Liu to diagnose specific cases, but also repeated thinking and practice comparing to the acupoint picture for acupuncture and human body model, which were given by Liu Shuo.
Everything comes to her who waits. Soon, Alva and Liu received their first patient together. This was a girl with Lower limb paralysis, who was diagnosed as fracture of lumbar vertebra by western medicine. Though having received surgeries, her gatism was not solved. After treating for two months, Alva and Liu studies out an acupuncture scheme and gave therapies uninterruptedly everyday. Finally, the gatism of the girl was solved. The girl's parents, after repeated thanks, especially held Dr. Alva's hands, saying: "Chinese doctors will go back to their home far away, but you would not leave. We need our compatriots to become acupuncture doctors. "
Since then, Alva worked harder to learn acupuncture and she hoped to receive more systematic acupuncture education. Alva said she had a dream of going to China, spending several years' study to gain a title of "black acupuncture doctor" for her life.
To help Alva realize her dream, Liu did quite a lot of job. Many enrollment guides of medical colleges in China were collected by Liu for Alva. "In order to leave acupuncture rooted in the ground of Africa and beneficial to more patients, my job is valuable,” said Liu in the end.
